Queen Elizabeth and her beloved Corgis!

In 1933, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret fell in love with the Corgis owned by the 5th Marquess of Bath, Thomas Thynne.

Queen Elizabeth’s father, Prince Albert, Duke of York (later George VI) purchased the Pembroke Corgi Rozavel Golden Eagle, from the Rozavel kennels in Surrey. The Corgi was renamed Dookie.

In 1944, for her 18th birthday, Princess Elizabeth was gifted a Pembroke Corgi. She named the first Corgi of her own Susan.

Susan the Corgi became the progenitor of all the Corgis later owned by the Royal Household.

Queen Elizabeth II bred ten generations of dogs from Susan, owning personally more than 30 of the dogs.

The Queen’s Corgis were either pure-bred Pembroke Welsh Corgis or crossbreed Corgi/Dachshunds (otherwise known as Dorgis.)

Some of the Queen’s Corgis were named Whisky, Sherry, Mint, Dash, and Disco.

The Queen’s Corgis slept in wicker baskets lined with cushions in their own room.

The Queen’s Corgis ate fine meals prepared by a gourmet chef. These meals included rabbit and beef.

In 2018, the last of the Corgis belonging to the Queen (descending from Susan) died.

In 2021, during the COVID-19 Lockdown, Prince Andrew gave his mother Queen Elizabeth II a Corgi named Muick.

For her 95th official birthday, Andrew’s daughters Beatrice and Eugenie gave the Queen a Corgi named Sandy.

After the Queen’s passing, the Corgis Quick and Sandy were placed in the care of Prince Andrew and his former wife Sarah, Duchess of York.
